The Italian car company, Maserati made its debut on the first of December, 1914. The Maserati brothers had a lot to do with the company's humble beginnings. Brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Ettore, Ernesto, Carlo, and Mario were all involved in the automobile industry dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. Three of the brothers, Ernesto, Bindo, and Alfieri constructed 2-litre Grand Prix cars for Diatto, an Italian car company. When World War II came about Maserati began to focus its attention on Italy's war effort. A V16 town car was even constructed for the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. After World War II, Maserati went back to designing cars, and the A6 series became very popular among the post-war racing arena. Other important people joined the Maserati team, such as Alberto Massimino, who took charge of Maserati racing car models for the next decade. In 1957, the Guidizzolo accident led Maserati to stray away from racing style cars to automobiles, which could be driven on normal road surfaces. Automobiles included a 6-cylinder 3500 2+2 coupe and a Vignale-bodied Sebring, which came out in 1962. Other cars built included the Mistral Coupe and the Spider. The company also built its first four-door automobile, called the Quattroporte, constructed by an ingenious man by the name of Pietro Frua.
The company eventually went through some ownership changes, first by the French car manufacturer Citroen and then eventually by De Tomaso. Alessandro de Tomaso used to be a race driver himself from Argentina, and when he took over Maserati, he became the managing director of the company. In the 1970's novel Maserati models were introduced to the public including the Maserati Kyalami and the famous Maserati Quattroporte III. The 1980's brought about more change. Mid-engine sport cars were abandoned for front-engined, rear drive coupes. These cars were more affordable and still delivered high power performance. The company was eventually taken over by Fiat in 1993. The year 1999 brought about a new phase in Maserati history with the introduction of the 3200 GT. This automobile was a coupe styled car with two doors, and it was powered by a 3.2 L twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which produced outstanding horsepower. By 1999, the company known as Ferrari took over Maserati, bringing the company back from the brink of bankruptcy.
