The Porsche is viewed as one of the most luxurious sports cars produced on the market. The old saying "God I wish I had a car like that" never applied more than to the Porsche, an automobile produced by Porsche SE, a German automotive manufacturer. The company was founded back in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche, an ingenious engineer born in Maffersdorf, Austria-Hungary (now known as the Czech Republic). The company was called "Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH". The company actually developed the Volkswagen Beetle upon the German government's request to build a car designed to fit people's needs. The Beetle went on to become a very successful vehicle. Volkswagen? people wonder from Porsche? Well Porsche SE is the holding company but has two primary subsidiaries, Porsche AG and Volkswagen AG. When Porsche did develop its first vehicle, the Porsche 64 in 1939, numerous parts from the successful Beetle were used to design the car. When World War II came about, Volkswagen came out with a military style Beetle, while Porsche produced designs for tanks, but eventually were beaten out by Henschel & Son, who produced the infamous Tiger tanks that caused so many problems for the invading Allied forces. However, Porsche did develop the Maus super heavy tank toward the end of the war, a more successful type of fighting tank.

Eventually Ferdinand ran into trouble at the end of the war. The Volkswagen portion of the company was taken over by British forces, and Ferdinand spent some time behind bars for so called war crimes. It was his son, Ferry Porsche, who guided Porsche through some of its darkest days until his father was released from prison in 1947. Eventually the Porsche 356 was developed, and by 1948 the vehicle became road certified. Ferdinand Porsche eventually died in 1951 after health problems resulting from a stroke. Early 356 models used Beetle parts primarily because automobile parts were hard to come by in post-war Germany, but eventually the Porsche 356 was constructed out of all Porsche made parts. In 1964 the Porsche 911 was released. This slick sports car had a six cylinder "boxer engine." Ferry Porsche's oldest son led the way to the body design of this vehicle. The 911 eventually became one of Porsche's most successful models, an icon to many and had a lot of success on the race track. After a long line of internal changes of ownership, which we will not go into detail here in this article, a man by the name of Dr. Wendelin Wiedking eventually became CEO in 1993. He turned Porsche into a very profitable company with innovative models that were extremely appealing to the public.

Porsche vehicles have had a successful history in the motorsport arena, winning plenty of races over the years. In fact, Porsche is currently the world's largest racing automobile manufacturer. In 2006, the company constructed 195 race cars for all different kinds of motor sporting events. Today Porsche is one of the most successful car companies in the world.
